Math

While some AS kids are a whiz at math, others have a horrible time with it. Kiddo is definitely one of the ones that has a hard time. She doesn’t have the patience for it and gets so stressed out by the simplest of problems. Word problems are enough to make her insane. I have read that it is pretty common for AS kids to have trouble with word problems because they have difficulty pulling out the relevant bits of information needed for the problem. Kiddo agrees with that statement.

At her old school, the math book they were using was new and very complicated. That made things so much worse for her. At the new school, they are using an older book but they are apparently much further ahead. They are doing things she hasn’t been introduced to yet. She had homework tonight and was unable to do most of it because the problems were all new to her. She didn’t want to hear me try to explain things to her. She just got frustrated and cried. So I figured I would leave that to the teachers to work with her.

It amazes me how far apart local districts can be. One is so much further behind than another. Very frustrating. Because of things like this, I worry that Kiddo will be held back in 5th grade next year. I don’t want that and neither does she but we may not have much choice in the matter. She missed almost 2 weeks of school due to the recent move and went from a slower school to a faster one… at least in math. In less than two months, we will be moving to St Louis where she may end up being out of school even longer because I can’t very well enroll her anywhere until we actually find a home. So… with all that time missed, I don’t see how she will be able to move on to 6th grade. She will be too far behind.

I just noticed you were moving to St. Louis. My wife, 2 kids (girls, 6 & 10), and I just moved to St. Louis in May. We haven’t been here long, although my wife has family in St. Louis, but so far we’ve found it a pretty great place to live. So, welcome to the neighborhood.

Thanks Matt. :) Yep, moving in a little over a month I think. I grew up in St Louis and have lots of family there. Lived there for about 23 years. It is definitely home to me. Although I hear all the highway construction is going to make life a little interesting for awhile.
