About
Asperger’s Syndrome is a neurobiological disorder that is considered to be on the Autism Spectrum. It is often referred to as a form of high functioning autism but different people have different view points on this.
While symptoms of Asperger’s Syndrome can vary from person to person, some of the more typical characteristics are as follows…
- Poor social skills
- Obsessive tendencies
- Clumsiness
- Inability to stay on topic
- Constant talking
- Odd facial grimaces
- Repetitive speech
- Difficulties in math, writing and reading (comprehension)
The list goes on and on but these are some of the more common things that are noted. Asperger’s Syndrome is most often diagnosed between the ages of 5-9 and seems to be more common in boys than girls.
The diagnosis of AS is not a horrible thing though. Or at least it doesn’t have to be. With a lot of patience and nurturing, the AS child can grow to be a functioning member of society just like anyone else. Their characteristics, while sometimes frustrating, can be a blessing too.
Hello and welcome to AspieMom.com. I am the proud mother of a ten year old daughter who was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome in 2006. I love to talk to others who have Aspie children. I feel it is important to learn all we can not only so we can cope as parents but so we can help the kids cope as well.
